Connect AI agents to Loam over MCP

Loam is in development. Join the waitlist to hear when it opens.

Loam includes an MCP server. Add its address to an AI app that supports the Model Context Protocol, sign in to Loam and approve what the app may do. The app can then search, read and write your notes, with a checkpoint saved before it edits and no way to delete a note for good. Agent access is part of Loam Pro.

Connect an AI app

  1. In your AI app’s MCP or connector settings, add a server with the address above.
  2. The app opens Loam’s sign-in page. Sign in with your passkey or your email and password.
  3. Loam shows what the app is asking for. Choose “Allow” to connect it, or “Don’t allow”.

The first connection asks to read and write notes. Sharing is asked for separately, the first time the app tries to share a note. Access tokens last 15 minutes.

Scripts and API keys

A script or a headless agent can use a personal API key instead of signing in. You choose the key’s scopes and its expiry date when you create it, and the script sends it as Authorization: Bearer. The tools it can use follow the key’s scopes.

Scopes

What each scope allows
ScopeWhat the app may doWhen it’s asked for
notes:read Search and read your notes, tags, comments and history Always, on first connection
notes:write Create and edit notes, comment, restore earlier versions and move notes to the trash On first connection
sharing:manage Share your notes with people, and change or remove their access Asked separately, the first time the app uses a sharing tool

The server has 27 tools. Each one needs the scope shown.

What agents can’t do

Agents act for you, but they read text other people may have written, so Loam gives them less power than you have. Loam’s server enforces these limits, whatever the app asks for.

  • Delete a note permanently. They can move notes to the trash, where you can restore them.
  • Create a share link.
  • Give someone a higher role. They can only keep or lower a role.
  • Invite someone who doesn’t already share a note with you.
  • Change your account, keys, devices or published notes.

Before an agent edits a note, Loam saves a checkpoint you can restore, and its edits appear live under the agent’s name. Note text reaches the agent marked as untrusted content, so instructions hidden in a shared note are easier for the app to ignore.
